On June 13th, 2009, I experienced my worst pain point when I unexpectedly lost my oldest son Anthony. He was 26 years old. He was scheduled to marry one month after his death, and he became a minister six days before his passing.
As we stood around his hospital bed, I had to make an agonizing decision - discontinue life support. This heartbreaking decision was made due to him being declared brain dead.
Throughout the terrain of loss and grief, I discovered that even when I experienced hopelessness or was overcome with waves of grief, I could regain control of my life through choice.
I chose to deep dive into the grief work of the heart to awaken the survivor in me.
As I grappled with deep sorrow, each choice led me to regaining control, reimagining my personal landscape, and rebuilding my life. My perspective shifted and I moved from grief immobilization to momentum.
I discovered that even at your worst pain point, you can build again.
